I stick to "on...I don't mind controversy. I stick to "one of the greatest nations" because of the ideals enshrined in the constitution - even if they are are not always followed. The lofty goals are what makes the U.S. so great, even if the country often falls short of those goals in practice. If is a low bar to compare the U.S. to many other countries, then that is a sad reflection on so many other countries in the world - and magnifies my point. (Saying that the US is 'way ahead of many other countries' is rather a low-bar and quite a ways from one of the greatest nations, IMO.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710228798415703303.post-16597453005055400752014-11-28T06:19:13.334-05:002014-11-28T06:19:13.334-05:00Fair enough. Sure the U.S. has its challenges and...Fair enough. Sure the U.S. has its challenges and race relations is certainly a big one. It's not enough to say that the country has elected a black president or that improvements have been made in some areas. There is much work to be done. There are certain other areas in which the U.S. could use some wholesale changes. We could probably name health care, education and gun laws to start with. But I would still argue that the U.S. is wrestling with those issues - and that, with all of its flaws, the U.S. is still way ahead of many other countries in the world in the areas I have cited. The vibrancy of its democracy, the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, the struggle to achieve greater equality are all values promoted by the United States and its ideals." <br />Actually hard to agree with this whole heartedly in the days after the ferguson verdict, but thats another subject.
